DS imaging LLC was formed to address some perceived needs of for-profit companies. The Purdue University Life Science Microscopy Facility could not fulfill the numerous requests to do high-end imaging, especially cryoSEM and EDS, in a timely manner due to the volume of internal work and shortage of available technician time.  In addition, there are few sources for education in the principles of electron microscopy, both SEM and TEM, where instruction can be given at the company site.  This reduces overall training cost and loss of staff productivity, while permitting an unlimited number of people to participating in the sessions.  Both of these needs can now be addressed through DS imaging LLC, an affiliate of the Purdue Research Park. In addition, consulting is available in laboratory design, facility management, and instrumentation purchases.

Debra Sherman, founder and Principle Scientific Officer of DS imaging LLC has an extensive background in electron microscopy, having worked with many different types of samples, served as director of a major facility, and taught courses in these disciplines for many years.

Debby has recently been selected as a FELLOW of the Microscopy Society of America based on her overall career in microscopy and her service to the society including her leadership role in the formation of the Facility Operation and Management Focused Interest Group.

Her career highlights are as follows:

  • B.S. , Biology, University of Pittsburgh. Initial TEM experience
  • M.S., Physiology, University of Chicago. TEM on single particles, mammalian tissue, yeast, and cultured cells; plus laboratory management.

  • Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of DSimaging LLC (2012-current)
  • Interim Director of the Life Science Microscopy Facility at Purdue University (2012)
  • Director of the Life Science Microscopy Facility at Purdue University (merger of the EM facilities in Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine) –a core facility serving the entire university community in the areas of Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy as well as basic light microscopy. The LSMF offers both full service in sample preparation and imaging as well as independent use of major tools to certified university students and staff. (2000-2011)
  • Manager of the Microscopy Facility in Agriculture, Purdue University (1989-2000)
  • Electron Microscopist and EM lab manager in the Department of Anatomy, University of Missouri School of Medicine
  • TEM specialist at the Cornell University Baker Institute for Animal Health

  • Instructor for ~ 20 years of courses in the Principles of Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscope.  These for-credit course, taught primarily to graduate students, have both lecture and laboratory components to prepare students for independent use of these tools.

  • Author of  ~ 60 peer-reviewed publications
  • Author of ~20 additional solicited publications and numerous abstracts & posters.

Society memberships and honors:

  • Member of the Microscopy Society of America and the Midwest Microscopy & Microanalysis Society
  • Organizer and first chair of the Focused Interest Group on Facility Organization and Management under the umbrella of the Microscopy Society of America
  • Fellow, Microscopy Society of America
